Gerrid Gust, a 28-year-old farmer from Davidson, Sask., is running for election to the Canadian Wheat Board board of directors.

Gust, who operates a mixed farm with his family, growing a wide variety of grains and raising beef cattle, will be seeking to unseat district 6 incumbent Ian McCreary.

He describes himself as a “choice” candidate, promoting a system in which farmers would either contract their wheat or barley to the CWB or operate outside the single desk and pooling structure, without being able to jump back and forth.

“I think the wheat board would provide better options if it was forced to fight for our grain,” he said.

Gust also wants greater director accountability, wants the board to focus on marketing and stay out of other policy debates, and wants to encourage greater farmer participation in CWB elections.

Nominations close Oct. 25. Ballots will be mailed to eligible voters on Nov. 1 and voting concludes on Dec. 3.
