Canadian companies are participating in a project to measure food loss and waste in this country.

Second Harvest, which bills itself as “the largest food rescue organization in Canada” is working with Value Chain Management International to research food waste as it occurs from production to consumer. The Walmart Foundation provides additional support.

“The project encompasses Canada’s food and beverage industry including fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, grains and oilseeds, sugars and syrups, beverages and seafood,” said a news release about the project.

Second Harvest and VCMI propose to survey 800 to 1,000 people, including farmers, processors, retailers, food service operators and institutions.

From that, they intend to calculate the total amount of food available for human consumption in Canada and identify how and why waste occurs at various points in the chain.

It also intends to identify potential solutions to reduce food loss and then write a manual on ways to address and prevent food waste.
