Breakfast gives oomph to day

Studies show that children who eat breakfast learn better, are more alert and attentive, and are more likely to participate in activities.

Only 12 percent of Canadians eat a balanced breakfast in the morning, however. More surprising is that only two percent of Canadian children aged seven to 12 years eat a balanced breakfast.

A balanced breakfast includes foods from at least three of the four food groups in Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating. In other words, choose from the grain products, vegetables and fruit, milk products or meat and alternatives groups. Try these quick and easy breakfast ideas:

  • Ready-to-eat cereal with fruit and milk.
  • Bagel with cheese and an apple.
  • Muffin, juice and yogurt.
  • Fruit smoothies (fruit and milk whirled in a blender).
