Inventor Len Ranch of Brooks, Alta., knew there had to be a simple way to solve problems caused by dangling blockheater cords.

The former service station owner was tired of seeing damaged blockheater plugs dangling in front of paint-chipped vehicle grills.

“I know from experience that blockheater cords make an irritating banging noise when you’re driving down the highway. And then there’s always the problem of having the plug’s prongs coated with ice and dirt when you go to use it,” Ranch said.

“I knew I could develop a device that would solve all of those problems and wanted to bring a finished product to market and see it on the shelf and say, ‘There it is, just like I imagined.’ It was an idea I had for many years and the biggest satisfaction now is having worked on one of my ideas and seeing it finally happen.”

Canola oil transloading facility opens

DP World just opened its new canola oil transload facility at the Port of Vancouver. It can ship one million tonnes of the commodity per year.

After two years of work, Ranch patented the device and found a manufacturer in China.

The Blockhead is a durable plastic device that attaches to the front of a vehicle’s bumper with an adhesive backing.

The blockheater plug plugs into it.

In summer, the Blockhead can be removed from the adhesive backing. The black, one by one inch square “outlet” has plug-in access on five sides. The luminous yellow plastic prong slots are visible in the dark.
