Beekeepers want to raise $1 million for bee research over the next decade.
At the Canadian Honey Council’s annual meeting held in Winnipeg recently, they passed the hat and started their fund with about $10,000.
Mark Winston, president of the Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists, encouraged beekeepers to pledge between 25 cents and $1 a hive. Donations are tax deductible.
Winston said the money will be used to get matching funds from governments to support research on overwintering bees and fighting varroa mites.
Government cuts to research funding led to the honey council to raise its own funds, he said.
