CALGARY (Staff) – Thousands of Alberta households will soon be receiving a postcard from cattle producers as part of a new beef promotion campaign.

About 25,000 producers have received promotion kits from the Alberta Cattle Commission and will be mailing out the postcards featuring two Alberta athletes and Longview rancher Scotty Horn entitled The Boys Come Home for Beef. Producers are encouraged to write a personal note on the card, inviting comments or questions from recipients.

Water skier Jaret Llewellyn and triathlete Marc Becker are internationally rated athletes who eat beef to meet the nutritional demands of rigorous athletic training. They are the newest athletes to join the beef team promoting the nutritional benefits of eating beef.

Koskie case proceeds

REGINA (Staff) – Quill Lakes NDP MLA Murray Koskie will likely go directly to trial after the provincial court was disqualified from presiding over his preliminary hearing last week.

Koskie, a former cabinet minister, was charged in December 1993 with two counts of fraud over $1,000 and two counts of breach of trust relating to alleged false claims against his communications allowance in 1991.

At an earlier court appearance Koskie’s lawyer had argued that provincial court judges could be biased against his client because they are suing the government for breaking the law. Last spring, the government refused to increase judges’ wages by 20 percent despite a recommendation from an independent commission.

Last week, judge Dennis Fenwick said a reasonable person could conclude the judges are biased against Koskie because of the dispute.

The Crown has recommended that Koskie’s case proceed by direct indictment to Court of Queen’s Bench. The justice department had not made a decision as of Nov. 4.
