For the second month in a row, the amount of beef consumed by grocery stores and their customers has increased.

In July, the amount of beef that had disappeared from the grocery coolers was 53 percent higher, or 116,000 tonnes more, than July 2002. In August, the amount of beef purchased was 40 percent higher, or 95,000 tonnes more, than in August 2002, said the Canfax report.

The amount can’t be called consumption because it’s impossible to say if the meat is in freezers or has already been eaten, said the Canfax report.

On a per capita basis, that translates to about 2.3 kilograms of beef that was available per person in August 2003, compared to 1.6 kg a year ago. Last year’s beef consumption was 22 kg of beef per person, compared to 24.5 per person this year.
