British Columbia farmers will meet with government officials this week to talk about the devastating crops across the province, says the assistant deputy minister of agriculture.

“We’ve had several crop crises across the province,” said Gord MacAtee, of Victoria.

Producers are expected to meet in Richmond Oct. 16 to look at the existing government programs like the Net Income Stabilization Account, crop insurance and industry development funds to see if these offer any help.

For the second year in a row, farmers in the Peace area have yet to finish harvesting their crops because of too much rain. Also, hail damaged fruit crops in the Okanagan and floods harmed potato crops around Pemberton, near Whistler.

MacAtee said they have no plans for ad hoc programs until the agriculture picture is complete.
