An agreement has been reached between the British Columbia and Alberta governments to study ways to improve northern transportation routes.

“By increasing the level of quality of rail service throughout the North, we can improve the movement of products and the result is economic growth and job creation,” said Dan Miller, B.C. employment and investment minister.

Seek new markets

A working group will be set up with the aim of improving access to international markets for Alberta and B.C. commodities, specifically grain and forest products. It expects to do that through more effective use of BC Rail and CN Rail lines, the rail interchange at Prince George and the Prince Rupert port.

Alberta transportation and utilities minister Walter Paszkowski said: “This important trade corridor will be of significant benefit to all of Canada. With the establishment of this working group, we can work together in order to enhance our competitiveness in the global marketplace.

“In addition, an enhanced northern transportation corridor will better position Alberta for offshore exports that will maximize our return on product revenue.”
