Economic progress often brings with it change and conflict. The fast pace of resource and industrial development, particularly in Alberta, has clashed with farmers, ranchers and others who worry about the effects on their land, water, air and lifestyle. Rural people have formed landowner groups in recent years, hoping that through strength in numbers they will gain equal footing with big companies.

Western Producer reporter Barb Duckworth has found these groups can improve the relationship between landowners and resource developers.
