EDMONTON – The Alberta government opened its $25 million research and training centre June 23 that will focus on food safety and value-added processing of food and industrial products.

The Agri-Food Discovery Place at the University of Alberta farm will focus its research on three areas: meat safety; crop use for food; and crop use for industrial products.

The centre will allow researchers to find new ways to remove pathogens from fresh meat without changing the quality of the store-bought food. The research will also search for ways to remove E. coli and lysteria from meat.

In the crop use section of the building, researchers will focus on breaking down crops into components like starch, fibre and beta gluten and find uses for the cereal components.

Researchers will also look for cost-effective, biodegradable alternatives for traditional fuel.
