The Alberta Women’s Institute voted to raise its yearly membership dues to $25 from $20 at its annual meeting in Red Deer June 8-10, said AWI president Mildred Lux.
While some women were opposed to the increase, the majority passed the resolution.
“We found that $20 wasn’t doing it anymore,” said Lux.
The money is used for mailing and office expenses for the women’s organization.
The women also began planning for next year, the 100th anniversary of Alberta as a province. Each local WI group was asked to submit 32 x 32 centimetre blocks to be made into quilts.

Most of the quilts will be auctioned off or sold by raffle to help offset the cost of the Federated Women’s Institute of Canada conference in Alberta in 2006. One of the quilts will be chosen to hang in the Alberta legislature next year as part of the centennial events.
One of the members will organize the 400 blocks into quilts and local groups will put the pieces together and quilt them. It takes about 30 blocks for a quilt.
“Some of the women are such good crafters,” said Lux.
About 175 members from across the province came to the convention.
