Alberta school boards merging

CALGARY (Staff) — Twelve Alberta school boards have merged into four as part of the provincial government’s plan to reduce the number of boards from 141 to 60 by 1995.

This spring the Alberta government took over many school board powers including collecting taxes and hiring of superintendents. In the most recent change, two of the groups regionalized and two amalgamated.

  • St. Paul Regional High School District, St. Paul Public School District, Glen Avon Protestant School District and the County of St. Paul board of education will be become St. Paul Regional Division No. 1 as of Jan. 1, 1995.

  • Spruce Grove Roman Catholic Separate School District and Stony Plain Roman Catholic Separate School District will be the Evergreen Catholic Separate Regional Division No.2 as of June 10, 1994.
  • In the north, Fairview Roman Catholic Separate School District and Spirit River Roman Catholic Separate School District dissolve as of Sept. 1 and will amalgamate with the Grande Prairie Roman Catholic Separate School District.
  • Cochrane Roman Catholic Separate School District and Airdrie Roman Catholic School Separate School District will dissolve as of Sept. 1 and will become part of the Calgary Separate School District.

Catholic boards were also given the choice to accept property tax money collected by the province through the Alberta School Foundation Fund. If they opt out, they will directly tax locally-declared separate school supporters at a rate no lower than the equivalent provincial tax.
