The province of Alberta can take some credit for Academy Award wins last night by the movie The Revenant.
Much of it was shot in Alberta, and the production employed about 700 Albertans, including make-up artists, production crew members and actors from the Siksika First Nation.
Ricardo Miranda, provincial minister of culture and tourism, today extended congratulations to the cast and crew of the movie, which won three Academy Awards, including best actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), achievement in directing (Alejandro Inarritu), and achievement in cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki).

“The Revenant is just the latest in a growing list of quality productions that are choosing Alberta, not only for our scenery, but for our amazing crews and industry supports.”
The Revenant is based on a true story involving explorer Hugh Glass, who was left for dead by his hunting team and surmounted seemingly impossible odds to survive in winter.
DiCaprio, who played Glass in the movie, was later the focus of some derision in Alberta when he said he had experienced evidence of global warming during filming when snow needed for the shoot suddenly melted.
In fact, the quick snow melt in that particular case was due to a chinook typical of the region.
