New rules guiding Alberta’s intensive livestock operations have been
released.
The regulations and standards are the guidelines that livestock
operators must follow in the New Year.
After years of controversy about where large hog barns and feedlots
could be built, the Alberta government introduced a bill in November
giving itself the authority instead of local municipalities to approve
or deny intensive livestock developments.
The regulations and standards released just before Christmas are the
details livestock producers need for expansion, how to apply manure,
notifying neighbors and water use.
The Natural Resources Conservation Board will be in charge of
monitoring and enforcing new and expanding confined feeding operations.
The new regulations will come into effect Jan. 1, 2002. Details can be
found at agric.gov.ab.ca.
