Faced with a growing population, the Alberta government plans to embark on a long-term safe drinking water strategy.

The government wants to develop five, 10 and 20-year plans to ensure safe drinking water, said Mark Cooper, an Alberta Environment spokesperson.

“Albertans need to be assured of safe drinking water,” said Cooper.

“With continued population and economic growth, the pressure to compromise on preservation will be great.”

While only in the initial phases, several departments, including agriculture, will work together to draft drinking water standards that will guide safe water practices in the future. Guidelines will not only deal with quality of water, but quantity and better ways to manage the province’s water, he said.
