WINNIPEG (Staff) – Hog producers in Alberta will soon have a forward contracting program similar to the one enjoyed by their Manitoba counterparts.

For a small fee, they will be able to sell part of their production for upcoming months for prices quoted by the Alberta Pork Producers Development Commission. The prices are based on Chicago Mercantile Exchange futures.

Gary Shaw, chair of Alberta Pork, said the group bought the technology and program from Manitoba Pork and hopes to have it running by April 1.

“With governments basically removing themselves from any form of support programs and those types of things, the onus will continue to be on farmers to do their own risk management,” Shaw said.

Alberta produces about 2.4 million hogs per year, slightly more than Manitoba.
