Agriculture wins business awards

Several agricultural businesses were winners at the recent Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce Achievement for Business Excellence awards.

Bioriginal Food and Science Corp. of Saskatoon was named business of the year and exporter of the year.

Bioriginal produces and sells nutritional supplements, cosmetics, pet and veterinary products, over-the-counter pharmaceuticals and functional foods. It specializes in essential fatty acids and other natural plant products with therapeutic benefits made from borage, evening primrose, black currant, flax and fish.

Three-quarters of its sales come from exports.

Bioriginal was also a finalist in the following categories: innovative work systems, marketing and physical environment.

Winner in the new venture category was SaskCan Pulse Trading, a Regina-based pulse crop processor and exporter.

Created in 2001 with Saskatchewan and Turkish investment, the company has a lentil splitting plant with a 75,000 tonne annual capacity. It was also a finalist in the job creation category.

Pine View All Natural Meats at Osler won the marketing category.

Pine View produces and sells what it calls natural meat from animals raised in a humane, stress-free environment on a vegetarian diet, without the use of growth promoting medications or hormones.

It works with neighbouring farms to supply a wide range of meats and sells the product at its on-farm butcher shop and through a network of retailers.

Pine View was also a finalist in the new venture and investment categories.

Other agricultural companies in the list of finalists were Western Alfalfa Milling of Norquay and Ralph McKay Industries of Regina, a maker of tillage tools.
