Continuing public concern about agriculture, the environment and food safety has prompted the provincial and federal governments to continue an agriculture awareness program.
“The public still has concerns about the environment, food safety and there is a lack of understanding of the impact of agriculture on the economy,” said Ron Brown, executive director of Growing Alberta.
A possible $1 million of federal money and $1 million of provincial money over three years was announced recently. The money is contingent on matching industry money.
The money will be used to raise the profile of agriculture, said Brown.
Growing Alberta, administered by the Agriculture and Food Council of Alberta, is an awareness program designed to create a greater understanding of agricultural issues, and to promote the success of the industry.
The money has been earmarked for projects like the recent 1,000-person Harvest Gala in Calgary, a new magazine available at Safeway and Alberta Treasury Branches, a website, speaker’s bureau and special events.
