Alberta Agriculture jobs

Alberta Agriculture recently announced four appointments.

Murray Davison is the department’s new rural development specialist in the Valleyview district office. Crop specialist Terry Buss joins the Vermilion district office.

Len Ring returns to the department as manager of the irrigation secretariat and Lee Anne Palutke takes over as editor of Alberta Agriculture’s Agri-News.

Farm couple honored

Bruce and Joyce Inglis recently received the Farm Oscar from the Parkland Lions Club in Yorkton, Sask. The Rokeby, Sask. couple were honored for their support of the family and their commitment to their community.

Petition launched over grazing lease controversy

Battle continues between the need for generation of tax revenue from irrigation and the preservation of native grasslands in southern Alberta rural municipality.

They operate a grain and Charolais farm with the help of three sons. Bruce has also been involved in minor sports in his community.

Ag scholarships

Two $500 scholarships are available to students enrolled in an agricultural or directly related programs at an Alberta post-secondary institution. The scholarships are offered by the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies.

Applicants must be community volunteers and must be nominated by their local agricultural society. Financial need is a consideration.

Food processor manual

The Alberta Food Processors Reference Manual offers practical advice and contact information about a variety of business topics.

Subjects include market research, business planning, food safety, packaging and labeling, strategic marketing, distribution, promotion, pricing, support services, manufacturing strategies, business organizations, human resource management, protecting yourself and the consumer, and developing a quality product.

Manuals cost $45 for Alberta Food Processors Association members and $65 for non-members.

More lambs in Canada

The country’s lamb flock grew by nine percent last year, according to Statistics Canada.

Lamb flocks grew in size in all provinces except the Maritimes.

Shrinking U.S. flocks and a weaker Canadian dollar are all contributing to the sector’s success, according to Alberta Agriculture.

New programs for Olds

Olds College has added four new diploma and certificate programs to its curriculum.

They are: arboriculture (horticulture major, two-year diploma); garden centre (horticulture major, one-year certificate/two-year diploma); composting technology (one-year certificate/two-year diploma) and seed and grain technology (second cohort, two-year diploma).
