New PAMI head

David Gullacher is the new president and chief executive officer of the Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute, the applied research and development organization that tests farm machinery.

Gullacher had previously been PAMI’s business development engineer.

Food services co-ordinator

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association has hired Norm Davidson to be its Alberta food service co-ordinator. Based in Calgary, Davidson will work with the hotel, restaurant and institution sectors to create consumer interest and demand for beef through marketing and promotion strategies.

Dairy web site

The Canadian Dairy Commission has set up a worldwide web site on the internet which will make available a variety of dairy information, including fact sheets, press releases, annual report highlights and regular updates on production and consumption trends. Call http://www.agr.ca/cdc to link up.

Fertilizer award

A soil scientist from Brandon, Man. has received the Robert E. Wagner Award in the senior scientist category from the Potash & Phosphate Institute of Norcross, Georgia. Loraine Bailey received the award for her research work in fertilizer use efficiency.

Animal breeding course

The Centre for the Genetic Improvement of Livestock at the University of Guelph, Ont. is offering new programs in June and August to help Canadian animal breeders. The courses cover new technologies, markets, product development strategies and communication links. The course, called Computer Technologies and the Animal Breeding Industry, is scheduled for June 10-12. Applied Genetic Evaluation is slated to run Aug. 7-9.

Teen rodeo planned

Rodeo contestants aged 14 to 21 are sought for the second Trail Blazer Kennedy 4-H Ranch Rodeo being held May 20.

The events are done by mixed teams of four and Saskatchewan 4-H members are encouraged to join up. Teams must supply their own horses and one adult coach. The rodeo includes calf branding, steer doctoring, team penning, breakaway roping and barrels. Trail rides and barbecues are also planned.

AgrEvo builds new plant

AgrEvo North America is going to build a new plant in Muskegon Township, Mich., where it will manufacture Liberty herbicide.

Liberty was introduced on Canadian canola in 1995 and is expected to be available for corn and soybeans in the United States next year.

The plant should be producing herbicide by 1998.
