The Canadian Belgian Blue Association has established a Western Canadian promotional committee. It will assist the general office with distribution and promotions in Western Canada.

Conservation family
Nestor and Vesper Kowalsky of Richard, Sask., were named the Saskatchewan Conservation Family of the Year recently by the Royal Bank of Canada and the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association.
The Kowalskys were chosen for their 12-year history of minimum tillage followed by five years of zero-till practices, and for conserving abandoned farmyards and marginal land for wildlife habitat.

The Kowalskys said in a news release that they have no plans to return to conventional tillage because zero-till has improved their soil tilth and contributed to better grain production.
The 1998 conservation group of the year was awarded to the agriculture diversification development board of Nipawin. This board started a direct seeding program in 1989 by establishing demonstration sites, providing tours, filing reports and making a video. Direct seeding and minimum tillage systems are now used on more than 20 percent of the grey-wooded soils in the region, said the news release
The board has also promoted shelterbelt planting.
Dairy ambassador
Angela Houle of Hague, Sask., has been named the Saskatchewan dairy youth ambassador for 1998, the Saskatchewan Dairy Foundation has announced.
Houle won the title in a competition that included a personal interview with a panel of three judges and a public speaking presentation at the recent dairy convention in Saskatoon.
As ambassador, Houle will participate in parades and various community events, meeting the public on behalf of dairy farmers. She is an agriculture student at the University of Saskatchewan.
