Beef grading head

Cindy Delaloye has been named general manager of the Canadian Beef Grading Agency. She has a degree in animal science from the University of Manitoba and has worked in several agricultural private and public positions.

The one-year-old agency was formed by the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, the Canadian Meat Council, La Federation des Bovines du Quebec and the Canadian Grocery Products Distributors Association. The agency’s first chair is Malcolm Getz of Agriculture Canada.

Altered corn hybrids OK

Ciba Seeds has received the first federal approval for hybrids genetically protected from the European corn borer.

Canada’s plant hardiness zones receive update

The latest update to Canada’s plant hardiness zones and plant hardiness maps was released this summer.

The Maximizer corn hybrids produce a protein that controls the insect pest. While seed supplies will be limited this year to growers in the 2,850 to 3,100 heat unit areas, the seeds will be widely available in 1997.

Canadian elk executive

Three Canadians are on the board of the North American Elk Breeders Association.

They are Cliff Begg of Buck Lake, Alta., Ed Lakusta of Calgary and Morris Gladwin of Thornhill, Ont.

Sask Pool delegates

Two vacant positions for delegates to Saskatchewan Wheat Pool have been filled by acclamation. The new delegates are Ernest Briggs of Whitewood for District 7, sub 2 and Calvin Connors of Palmer for District 5, sub 2.

New research manager

Agriculture Canada has appointed Ken Kirkland as manager of the Melfort Research Centre in Saskatchewan. He will continue to manage the Scott Research Centre as well.

Kirkland’s work relates to the development of new weed management technology. He was named the distinguished agrologist in Saskatchewan in 1992 and received the award for excellence in weed science for Western Canada in 1993.
