New head for growers

TABER, Alta. (Special) – Ian Wood of Taber, Alta., was named by acclamation as chair of the Alberta Vegetable Growers (Processing).

He succeeds Rudy Gregus of Taber, who did not seek re-election but will sit on the board of directors for his district. Gregus was elected vice-chair.

George Friesen was elected a director for the Vauxhall district. Rob Oudman was elected director for the Taber district.

The rest of the board of directors include Dave Matthies of Coaldale, and Roy Maier and Paul Thibodeau of Taber.

Dairy website

Dairy Farmers of Canada has its own website, launched at the end of January. The site, located at www.dairyfarmers.org, contains information on the organization, key issues, industry news and a page of frequently asked questions.

Under a related site, www.dairybureau.org, there is marketing and nutrition information, including recipes, special events and market trends.

Website winner

The Beef Information Centre website has received the Best Food Industry Site award from the Web Marketing Association.

“The award is certainly a feather in our cap,” said BIC committee member Marvin Molzan, in a news release. The site address is www.beefinfo.org.

It contains information about beef, including meat cuts, storage tips, cooking instructions and recipes. There is also a nutrition section containing a quiz.

Cargill funds research

Cargill Limited and Cargill Hybrid Seed will contribute $60,000 over the next three years to the Ontario Corn Producers’ Association, to be used for corn production research.

The association and Cargill will together identify research projects, according to a news release issued by Cargill. The grain industry giant operates 24 farm service centres in Ontario and is a joint venture partner in 10 other Ontario grain and crop businesses.
