Lakeland wins judging

The team from Lakeland College at Vermilion, Alta., claimed top awards at the University of Saskatchewan intercollegiate judging competition in November.

Lakeland’s team of Clint Sutter, James Purdy, Laurie Nagel and Derek Jones placed first in beef judging, second in canola and third in dairy. Jones and Colin Toner also earned awards as the top individual beef judges.

In the stockmen’s showdown, Lakeland’s team of Toner and Sutter was overall grand champion. The event featured all beef classes; bulls, heifers, steers and carcasses.

Lakeland teams are now preparing for upcoming competitions in Guelph, Ont., and the college’s own intercollegiate competition, both on March 17.

Equipment directory

The Prairie Agriculture Machinery Institute is selling a new specialty crops equipment directory. It costs $15 and contains 1,100 listings on special crop equipment available in Canada and the United States, equipment descriptions and dealer and manufacturer contact information.

Engineer of year

The engineer of the year award, handed out at the North Central Intersectional conference, has been given to an agricultural engineer.

Larry Chanasyk, who has worked for Versatile for 18 years, was given the award for his work in the standards and safety of agricultural machinery. Chanasyk is chair of the CSA technical committee for agricultural machinery standards. This committee reviews and develops Canadian national standards related to worker health and safety.

New chair at Morris

The George Morris Centre has appointed Paul Oliver as the new chair, for a one-year term. Oliver, president of Pillsbury Bakeries and Foodservice Inc., has been on the board since 1991 and has worked in the food industry for 23 years.

The George Morris Centre is a think-tank for policies and issues affecting Canadian agriculture.

Paul Hodgman was appointed to a three-year term as board vice-chair. Hodgman has spent much of his career working for the Veterinary Infectious Diseases Organization in Saskatoon.

Charolais scholarships

The Canadian Charolais Association handed out university entrance scholarships to two recipients. Stephen Cholak from Lamont, Alta., and Leslie Johnson from Grande Prairie, Alta., were awarded the $400 scholarships in November.

Cholak, 18, is involved with the family purebred operation Circle Cee Charolais.

Johnson, 18, has a small purebred Charolais herd and is an active junior member of the CCA.
