New at Ag-West helm
William Riley of Saskatoon has been appointed president of Ag-West Biotech Inc. Formerly the research and development vice-president with the Canola Council of Canada, Riley replaces Murray McLaughlin, who was named deputy minister of the Saskatchewan agriculture department in March.
Dairy reference
Pennsylvania State University has put together a third edition of the Dairy Reference Manual that covers facets of operating a dairy farm from raising young stock to nutrition to housing.
The manual is designed for agricultural department agents, consultants, veterinarians, educators and farmers.

The 13-chapter manual includes farm management, dairy housing, handling and behavior, nutrition, physiology and disease, reproduction, milking equipment, veal and dairy beef and dairy goats.
Much of the information is carried in tables and there are also illustrations showing freestall barn layouts, pen designs, ventilation systems and handling equipment.

Herbicide testing
Testing for herbicide resistant weeds is available at the Saskatchewan agriculture department’s crop protection laboratory in Regina.
The service is designed to help farmers diagnose herbicide failures that cannot be explained by application problems or other factors. It is expected to help farmers with management of a herbicide-resistance program.
The fees charged are $55 per sample for group one wild oat; $35 per sample for group one green foxtail; $30 per sample for group three green foxtail. Other weeds and herbicide groups cost $60 per sample.
Forms are available from all rural service centres, most elevators and from chemical industry representatives.
