Alberta names swine vet
Julia Kleenside is the new Alberta Agriculture swine veterinarian.
Trained at the University of Guelph, Kleenside is responsible for co-ordinating provincial programs such as herd health, liaison with veterinarians and applied research on current swine health issues in the province.
Checking the soil
Richard Lussier is the new soil management specialist based in the Peace region’s Spirit River district office. Lussier will be a resource to other district specialists, producer groups, agri-business, applied research groups and individual farmers. He will focus on soil fertility, soil conservation and problem soils in the Peace region. He grew up on a farm in the McLennan area.

Animal care head
Jim Fiest is the new chair of the Alberta Foundation for Animal Care. The Cleardale beef producer is a director of both the Western Stock Growers’ Association and the Alberta Cattle Commission.
Vice-chair is Peter Schuld, a dairy and beef producer from Iron Springs, Alta.
Sustainable research
More than $1 million has been awarded to Alberta Agriculture researchers through the Canada-Alberta Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture Agreement. Nineteen of the applied research proposals addressed one or more of CAESA’s main priority areas of soil conservation, water quality and quantity, pollution control and water management and wildlife habitat. Two projects deal with alternative pest control.
Gold-plated milk
Quality achievement awards have been issued to 257 Manitoba milk producers. To produce quality milk a clean environment must be maintained, milking equipment must be clean and functioning properly, good milking procedures must be practiced and the udder health status of individual cows monitored.
Dairy producers receiving special recognition from the Manitoba Dairy Manufacturers Association under this program in 1994 are: Rosser Holsteins of Rosser; David and Victor King of Arborg; Boonstra Brothers of Marquette; Sunnyside Colony Farms of Newton Siding; Morley and Kathleen Sundell of Holland; Beswitherick Farms of Austin; Meisner Cousins of Moosehorn; Allan Houndle of Petersfield; Curtis Cook of Clanwilliam and Grant Didkowski of Snowflake.
Upjohn officer
Hossam Ahmed Abdellatif has joined the Upjohn company as a technical information officer. Hossam will be responsible for co-ordinating retrieval, storage and circulation of technical information between the company and its customers, especially in the company’s growing biologics/diagnostic business.
