West

  • Seeding is nearly complete. Cool temperatures and showers slowed crop progress. Farmers forced to reseed some canola after frosts. Spraying is underway for weeds.
  • Flea beetle pressure increasing. First cut hay yields expected to be below average. Some plants stressed by recent frost, hail and wind in the southwest but crops are generally very good.

Saskatchewan

South

  • Moisture conditions good to excessive, with tan spot reported on winter wheat leaves. Earlier frosts slowed pasture and hay growth in southwest. Frost damage reported in the southeast.
  • Crops are generally excellent but heat is needed. Spraying for weeds has begun.

Central

  • Seeding progress variable due to last week’s cool, wet conditions. Growers switching to barley and oats over wheat and canola. Weed spraying will begin this week. Gophers, wireworms and flea beetles have caused damage. Pastures and hay crops good to excellent.

North

  • Early-sown crops advanced rapidly last week but cold, wet conditions delayed seeding. Weed growth heavy in many crops. Fields saturated in the northeast. Some canola reseeded due to crusting. Hay and pasture land good to excellent.

Alberta

South

  • Pea weevil widespread in pea fields, with spraying operations underway. Hay and pasture growth slow.

Central

  • Rain delayed seeding. Some areas estimated as 50 percent complete. Few crops have emerged. Many fields may not be seeded due to wet conditions.

North

  • Some canola reseeded due to poor stands from deep seeding. Spraying is underway. Crops generally in good to very good condition, with warmer weather helping with growth.

Peace River

  • Hay and pasture lands in good shape. Cool, wet weather slowed seeding and forced some producers to seed barley, fescue and oats.

Conditions as of June 4
