MANITOBA

Cereal harvest is close to completion in most areas.

East

  • Flax and canola harvest is advancing with few fields left to combine.
  • Soybean, corn and sunflower crops continue to advance with corn silage being cut and grain corn harvest about two weeks away.
  • Canola yields range from 20 to 50 bushels per acre. Flax yields are average to below average.
  • Soil conditions are dry and pastures are recovering.

Interlake and central

  • Canola and flax swathing is nearly complete and combining is well underway in the northern Interlake and near completion in the south.

  • Corn silage is fully underway. Sunflower crops are being desiccated.
  • Winter wheat is being seeded.
  • Pastures are poor with little regrowth.
  • In the central area, only canola and flax are left to combine.
  • Yields in the higher rainfall areas are a bit better than in the lower rainfall areas.
  • Canola yields range from 15 to 50 bu. per acre, with low green seed counts.
  • Some wind damage to swaths is reported.
  • Flax yields are 10 to 30 bu. per acre. Oat yields have been as high as 100 bu. per acre.
  • Sunflowers are being desiccated.
  • There are reports of sclerotinia and head rot in sunflowers.
  • Winter wheat is being seeded.
  • Pastures are very dry with little regrowth.

West

  • Canola harvest ranges from nearing completion in the south to about half done in the north.
  • Canola yields range from below average to slightly above average.
  • Winter wheat is being seeded.
  • Pastures are dry with little regrowth.
  • In the north, wheat yields range from 20 to 70 bu. per acre, barley 30 to 75 bu. and oats 15 to 90 bu.
  • Quality and grades of cereals have been good with light weights in dry areas.
  • Canola harvest is rapidly advancing with below average to average yields and low green seed.
  • High numbers of flea beetles are reported.
  • Pastures are in very poor shape.

SASKATCHEWAN

Harvest is well underway in all regions.

East

  • In the south, pea and lentil harvest is nearing completion. Yields continue to be highly variable but will be average to slightly above average for both yield and quality.
  • Canola yields are higher than expected at 35 to 45 bu. per acre.
  • Pastures continue to decline and cattle are being fed in drier areas.
  • In the north, winter wheat and fall rye harvests are nearing completion.
  • Cereal yields and quality are average to above average, but downgrading in wheat is expected from midge damage.
  • Pastures are good to excellent.

Central

  • In the east, pea and lentil harvesting is 80 percent done.
  • Recent rains have delayed harvest.
  • Some areas reported hail damage in swathed canola.
  • Yields are average to slightly above average.
  • Quality for most crops is good but wheat is being downgraded to No. 3 due to midge damage.
  • Pastures are dry.
  • In the west, several hailstorms were reported, with severe damage.
  • Yields are reported as average.
  • Sawfly damage and wind have lodged fields.
  • Pastures are good.

West

  • In the south, only some late wheat, durum, flax, chickpeas and canola remain to be harvested.
  • Higher green seed levels have delayed harvest in canola.
  • Pastures are in fair condition but are drying up.
  • In the north, peas are nearly two-thirds done. Yields are above average for wheat, durum, flax, canola and peas.
  • Wind damage reported in swaths.
  • Pastures are good.

ALBERTA

South

  • Only chickpeas remain in fields, with most peas, wheat, barley and canola harvested.
  • Yields for late seeded crops are below expectations due to the very dry conditions.
  • Dry bean and sweet corn harvest has begun.

Central

  • Most crops have been swathed or are ready for straight combining.
  • Combining is well advanced in the east and has just begun in the western areas.
  • Cereal yields are below average for many areas due to hail damage and high temperatures.
  • Barley weight is light averaging 48 pounds per bu.
  • Pastures are good.

North

  • In the east, harvest is about 30 to 50 percent complete.
  • Wheat yields range from 35 to 65 bu. per acre, peas 25 to 60 bu. per acre and canola 30 to 50 bu. per acre.

Peace River

  • Harvest progress is variable across the Peace.
  • Canola harvest in the southwest Peace is nearly complete but has just begun elsewhere.
  • Yields vary from poor to slightly below average.
