Due to technical problems, this week’s crop report lacks information for some regions.

MANITOBA

Central and West

  • Cereals are 85 percent harvested at Neepawa, with average to above average yields.
  • Some ergot is reported.
  • Good quality grain is coming off. Canola is 50 to 65 percent harvested, with yields poorer than most years.
  • Flax is desiccated. Potatoes are bulking well.
  • Sunflower and corn silage is looking good.
  • Soybeans are turning.
  • Varying amounts of rain up to 40 millimetres cited.

    Canola support gets mixed response

    A series of canola industry support measures announced by the federal government are being met with mixed reviews.

  • Near Hamiota, cereals are about 70 percent harvested and canola is about 20 percent done.
  • Flax harvest is underway in good conditions.
  • Solid average to above average crops are expected.
  • About half the winter wheat crop is sowed.

South

  • Near Morris, cereals are harvested, with good yields and quality.
  • Fifty percent of canola and flax is harvested. Some fields yielded 30 bushels per acre.
  • Sunflowers, soybeans and corn are progressing.
  • Wheat yields vary near Sanford, with most cereals combined and about 90 percent of canola combined.
  • Winnipeg area reports indicate average canola yields.

SASKATCHEWAN

East-central

  • Harvest is underway at Langenburg, with wheat 40 percent complete and some barley, oats and canola done.
  • Wheat is yielding 40 bu. per acre, barley 80 and peas 40.
  • Later crops are not yielding as well due to a lack of moisture.
  • Up to 50 mm of rain reported.
  • At Springside, swathing is well underway and combining has started.
  • Canola is 80 percent swathed and 10 percent combined. Yields are average at 40 bu. per acre.
  • Wheat is 95 percent swathed and 50 percent combined, with yields average to above average at 60 bu. per acre.
  • Barley is 90 percent swathed and 50 percent combined, with variable yields and good quality.
  • Some hail damage was reported.
  • Most peas are in the bin, with average yields and good quality.
  • Wheat midge damage noted.

Central

  • At Elfros, swathing of canola is general, with some combining. Yields are up to 50 bu. per acre.
  • Good quality and yields are reported in barley, at 100 bu. per acre.
  • Very little wheat is off. Grade reduction is expected due to wheat midge damage.
  • Hail damage reported.
  • Wheat midge is less severe around Saskatoon than in other districts.
  • Pastures will benefit from recent rain.
  • Flea beetles and wheat midge have been observed.

West

  • About half the combining is done near Eatonia, with red lentils yielding around 20 bu. per acre and durum yielding up to 50 bu.
  • Pulse crop yields are average around Kindersley at 30 bu. per acre. Field peas yields are 40 bu.
  • Quality is good on durum.
  • Hail has damaged crops.

ALBERTA

Southwest

  • Harvest is progressing well near Coaldale, with most cereals and oilseeds finished.
  • Beans are being cut, with yields of 2,500 to 2,800 pounds.
  • Beans experienced much disease pressure this year.
  • Potato harvest is underway. Sugar beets will come off earlier than normal, in mid-September.
  • Sweet corn harvest is progressing, with a better than average harvest.
  • About 50 percent of cereals are off, with average to above average yields and better quality than other years.
  • Canola is swathed but little has been harvested.
  • Some early dry beans are cut.
  • Silage corn looks great due to high temperatures.
  • Third cut of alfalfa is coming off looking good.

Central

  • Pea combining is complete at Vegreville and yielding 40 bu. per acre.
  • Pre-harvest desiccation is largely done.
  • Wheat is yielding up to 45 bu. per acre.
  • Some malting barley has been combined.
  • Canola is swathed but little is harvested. Yields are up to 45 bu.
  • At Westlock, harvest is starting.
  • Volumes and grades are better than last year.
  • Canola is disappointing due to heat and drought.
  • Peas are mostly combined. Yields were reduced by heat but still yielded up to 60 bu. per acre.
  • Rain fell, but pastures are still showing stress.
  • Small grasshoppers were seen in fields west of Edmonton.

Peace River

  • Yield prospects are poor for canola.
  • Dry conditions are also dimming the outlook for the impending cereal harvest.

South

  • At Strathmore, canola swathing is half done and barley is yielding up to 100 bu. per acre.
  • Pea harvests went well, although pea leaf weevil reduced yields from last year’s totals.
  • A good supply of hay is reported.
  • Some pastures are stressed.
