MANITOBA

Interlake-southeast

  • Heavy rain and flooding contribute to crop deterioration and delayed haying.
  • Heat and humidity hurt barley and canola.
  • Cereals are heading while canola has finished flowering.
  • Many crops will likely become greenfeed to compensate for anticipated shortages in hay.

Central

Southwest

  • Hot, humid weather.
  • Cereals are heading, canola and pulses finishing flowering and flax 80 percent flowering.
  • Disease pressures are high in cereals and pulses, with leaf rust in wheat.
  • Haying is half done, with above average yields and poor quality.

Northwest

  • Yield potential for cereals is rated good, while considered poor to fair for canola.
  • Haying is variable with above average yields and declining quality.
  • Insects sighted include painted lady larvae in borage, diamondback moths and bertha armyworms.

SASKATCHEWAN

East-central

  • More rain needed.
  • Cereals are heading to filling, canola is podding and flax is 80 percent flowering.
  • Aphids in field peas, with painted lady larvae and diamondback moths reported.
  • Disease pressure is high, with leaf rust and tan spot in wheat and net blotch and ascochyta reported in field peas.
  • Haying is well advanced, with high yields and quality expected. Pastures in good shape.

Southeast

  • Cereals filling, flax finished flowering.
  • Insects sighted include diamondback moths, bertha armyworms, aphids, wheat midge, lygus bugs and flea beetles.
  • Hay yields are high with good quality. Pastures are rated good to very good.

Southwest

  • Hot, sunny weather has advanced crops. Moisture stress has occurred in mustard, barley and canola.
  • Cereals are filling, with good yield potential. Canola is podding and filling, with reasonable yields expected. Flax has finished flowering with average yields expected.
  • Areas south of Swift Current received damage to buildings, vehicles and crops in wind and hailstorms.

West-central

  • Hot and humid weather is reported with thunderstorms and hail around Blaine Lake.
  • Crops expected to produce high yields.Wheat late in development. Canola and pulses further along.
  • Tan spot reported in wheat, net blotch in barley and ascochyta blight in pulses.
  • Diamondback moths abundant in canola.
  • Twenty percent of the zone needs rain.

Northwest

  • Crops look good to excellent.
  • Grasshoppers, bertha armyworms and flea beetles are reported.
  • Haying is well advanced, with good yields and quality. Pastures are very good.

ALBERTA

Peace River

  • Crops’ yield potential is average to above average with hot humid weather reported.
  • Cereals are heading to filling and canola is finishing flowering.

Northwest-Edmonton

  • Crops are good to excellent, with high yield potential.
  • Disease is low to moderate in cereals, but moderate to high in canola in sclerotinia.
  • Haying is well under way, with good yields but reasonable quality. Pastures are very good.

Northeast

  • Rain and thunderstorms caused lodging.
  • Crops rated good to excellent.
  • Cereals are filling and canola has finished flowering, while pulses are flowering.
  • Diseases are increasing in cereals, with tan spot and septoria. Scald and net blotch are reported in barley, with a moderate potential for sclerotinia in canola.
  • Haying is complete, with moderate quality and reasonable yields reported.

Central

  • Scattered hail damage reported.
  • Crops are good to excellent, with high yield potential.
  • Cereals are filling, canola is podding to flowering and peas are flowering.
  • Cereal diseases are prevalent in barley and wheat, with the potential for sclerotinia.

South-Calgary

  • Late-flowering canola is experiencing heat stress. Some crops are recovering from excess moisture and developing secondary branches.
  • Cereals on light land are ripening and expected to produce good yields.
  • Canola yields will be fair to good. Silage making is under way.
  • First cut hay is complete, with reasonable yield and quality. Pastures in good condition.
  • Insect pressure is light, with some diamondback larvae.

South

  • Crops good, average cereal yields expected.
  • Canola is recovering from moisture stress.
  • Diseases are moderate to high in pulses and cereals.
  • Corn is advancing rapidly, with tasseling beginning. Yields are expected to be very good.
