Manitoba

Southeast

  • Seeding is progressing, with 70 percent of crops sown south of the Trans-Canada Highway.
  • Early seeded crops are germinating and starting to emerge.

Central

  • Seeding is variable from 20 to 90 percent due to rain.
  • Moisture levels increase from west to east in the region.
  • Frost caused damage in early seeded crops in some areas.

Interlake

Southwest

  • About 85 percent of pulses and 40 percent of cereals are seeded.
  • Frost damaged early seeded crops.

Northwest

  • Seeding from 25 to 50 percent complete, due to rain in the zone.
  • Areas around Swan River and Dauphin are dry.
  • Cool weather slowed germination and emergence.
  • Redback cutworms are reported here and in other parts of Manitoba.

Saskatchewan

East

  • Surface soil is dry, with rain needed for germination from Hudson Bay to Moose Jaw-Gravelbourg and to the Manitoba border.
  • Abut 60 percent of pulses, 40 percent of wheat and 30 percent of canola are seeded.
  • Flea beetles are reported, with no reports of damage.

South

  • Seeding is 80 percent complete, with frost reported.

Northwest

  • Soil moisture is adequate for germination.
  • Seeding operations are in full swing.

Alberta

Peace River

  • About 80 percent of the crop is seeded, with less progress near Grande Prairie.
  • Flea beetles are reported in canola.
  • Cool weather delayed germination and early growth.
  • Some pea and canola fields were reseeded due to weather.
  • Surface soil moisture is adequate.

Central

  • Most of the crop is seeded and emerging.
  • Flea beetles are reported.
  • Rain required as surface moisture is low.

Northeast

  • Seeding was delayed due to wet fields, but is now under way.
  • Ponoka area is dry.

South

  • Seeding is almost complete, with the crop emerging.
  • Frost as low as Ð12 C damaged sugar beets, many of which had to
    be reseeded.
  • Area is dry, with irrigation
    already required to help crops germinate.
  • Barley around Taber and Burdett is coming back after cool weather caused setbacks.
  • Cutworms and wireworms are in the area.
