TRURO, N.S. – Students and others thinking about a career in agriculture can now turn to the internet for information.

Agriculture Canada and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture last week launched a website that identifies types of jobs in agriculture, what they do, salary ranges, qualifications and other information job seekers need.

Federal agriculture minister Lyle Vanclief said agriculture, food processing and related industries employ about two million Canadians or 15 percent of the workforce.

However, there are careers within agriculture that are not well understood, particularly by the urban population.

“There is a lot more to agriculture than farming … . The speed of change is phenomenal,” he said.

Federation president Jack Wilkinson said his organization is concerned about a recently reversed trend toward lower enrolments in agricultural colleges.

The website, maintained by the federation, is not a bulletin board listing available jobs. It is designed to give young people quick and concise information about careers in agriculture and provide links to colleges and universities that offer relevant courses and training. The site is located at http://www.cfa-fca.ca/careers/startf.html.
