Pork projects funded
The federal government is contributing $4.6 million to three pork industry projects.
Canada Pork International will receive more than $3.2 million for export market development initiatives.
Another $550,000 will support the Canadian Pork Council’s national marketing activities to increase consumption and value domestically.
The council will also get an additional $850,000 to help industry prevent and prepare for the eventuality that African swine fever could occur in Canada.
Director named for dairy research centre
Dr. Stephen LeBlanc, a professor in the Ontario Veterinary College’s Department of Population Medicine, has been named the inaugural director of Dairy at Guelph at the University of Guelph.

Dairy at Guelph is a centre of research dairy production science and systems, established in 2016.
LeBlanc studies metabolic and reproductive health and management in dairy cows. He will serve as director for five years.
Young farmer award winner announced
Shelley Meadows from Saskatoon is the recipient of the 2021 W.R. Motherwell Award by Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmer program.
Meadows took on the vice-chair position for Saskatchewan OYF from 2000-06, where she successfully helped organize and co-ordinate the regional event during that time.
She held the national event co-ordinator position for Canada’s OYF from 2012-16.
Meadows and husband Kelvin were Saskatchewan Outstanding Young Farmers in 1998, while running a seed farm at Marquis.
They went on to operate an oat processing plant in Regina for years and now crop inspect during the summer.

MFGA unveils board executive
The Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association recently announced the 2022 board executive.
Two new board members include Chelsi Malach of Hartney and Peter Tokar of the Swan River area.
The executive will serve two-year terms on the board.
- Chair: Lawrence Knockaert farms near Bruxelles and is also a director for Dairy Farmers of Manitoba, as well as the MFGA board representative on the Manitoba Beef and Forage Initiatives.
- Vice-chair: Michael Duguid farms in the Arnes area using a regenerative approach.
- Finance chair: Andrea Hamilton farms near Glenboro and works in potato research at MHPEC.
- Past-chair: Larry Wegner farms in the Virden area and certified as a coach in the Integrity Soils network. He will serve one year as the MFGA past-chair, assisting the new executive with transition.
