Dam anniversary
The Boundary Dam Power Station is celebrating its 50th anniversary.The dam, operated by SaskPower, can generate 824 megawatts of electricity from six units, which represents more than 20 percent of SaskPower’s generating capacity. It employs about 300 workers in Estevan, Sask. Boundary’s first unit was brought on line in 1960 and generated 62 megawatts.

Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods and Oils has been selected for the 2010 Best New Product Award and the 2010 Company of the Year Award from the Manitoba Food Processors Association.The awards were announced on May 12.Manitoba Harvest earned the Best New Product Award for its new hemp PRO-70 protein powder, the world’s first water-soluble hemp protein concentrate diet supplement.Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods and Oils was founded in 1998, and calls itself the world’s largest vertically integrated, farmer owned hemp food manufacturer.

Food safety education
The Beef Information Centre is continuing its consumers education campaign.The initative is delivered through the Canadian Partnership for Consumer Food Safety Education, of which the BIC is a founding member. The partnership’s programs are designed to raise awareness and provide consumers with knowledge and tools to handle food, including Canadian beef, safely.BIC’s involvement in the Canadian Partnership for Consumer Food Safety Education means retailers, suppliers, health professionals, teachers and dietians have access to information.Besides BIC, there are about two dozen public and private sector members of the partnership, including the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Health Canada, Public Health Agency of Canada, Chicken Farmers of Canada, Egg Farmers of Canada, Canadian Pork Council, Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors and the Canadian Produce Marketing Association.The partnership maintains two websites (www.canfightbac.ca, www.befoodsafe.ca).
