OYF program presents Motherwell award
The Outstanding Young Farmer program has presented this year’s W.R. Motherwell Award to Komie Hossini of Calgary, who was a previous sponsor representative for Bayer Crop Science from 2012-23.
While holding that position, Hossini:
- Attended national events.
- Attended strategic planning sessions in 2013 and 2018.
- Served as a board member from 2016-18.
- Attended board meetings and communicated with other sponsors.
He continues to sit on the program’s social media committee.

B.C. program targets rural vets
The British Columbia government has introduced a program to help attract and retain livestock veterinarians in rural parts of the province.
Clinics in the southeast, Okanagan, Thompson, Southern Cariboo, Vancouver Island, Lillooet and Pemberton areas will be designated as secondary priority areas, with the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley being the lowest priority area.
The program will also help develop local partnerships to improve strategic planning for veterinary services in under-serviced communities and regions.
The first intake for applications ends Jan. 15.
FCC supports 4-H clubs
Thirty-four 4-H clubs in Saskatchewan received grants of up to $500 last year under the FCC 4H Club Fund.
Since its creation in 2013, the fund has contributed more than $1 million to more than 2,100 4-H clubs across Canada.
Applications for the next round of funding will open in August.

Grain Growers elects new chair
Tara Sawyer has been elected the new chair of Grain Growers of Canada.
She is a grain farmer from Acme, Alta., and chair of Alberta Grains.
Joining her on the executive are Scott Hepworth, a grain grower from Assiniboia, Sask. and a director of the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission, as first vice-chair and Sally Parsonage, a grain producer from Baldur, Man., and secretary of Manitoba Crop Alliance, as second vice-chair.
They replace members of the outgoing executive: Andre Harpe, William van Tassel and Brendan Phillips.
College offers digital ag course
Assiniboine College has introduced an eight-week digital agriculture fundamentals course with the help of Palette Skills.
The intensive, hybrid upskilling program is designed to introduce mid-career professionals to careers in digital agriculture.
The program will begin Feb. 3, with six weeks part-time and two weeks full-time.
Delivered mostly online, the program also includes in-person sessions.
Students will engage in both theoretical learning and practical, hands-on applications.
Industry experts will cover emerging technologies such as Geographic Information System, Internet of Things, drones, artificial intelligence, robotics and autonomous machinery.
Students will also develop a full suite of professional skills including project management, problem-solving and team-building.
