Dairy projects receive federal funding
Dairy Farmers of Canada has been promised federal funding of more than $8.5 million for two projects to improve existing producer support tools, such as the national dairy cattle traceability program, DairyTrace and the related proAction quality assurance program.
The organization will receive up to $5 million over five years to advance sustainability and public trust in the dairy industry, leveraging the proAction quality assurance program.

The latest update to Canada’s plant hardiness zones and plant hardiness maps was released this summer.
It will also receive up to $3.57 million over five years to build on its existing tools and strengthen DairyTrace to help protect and enhance animal health, public trust and sustainability.
The funding comes through the AgriAssurance Program–National Industry Association Component under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
UFA appoints new president
Fred Thun will become United Farmers of Alberta Co-operative Ltd.’s new president and chief executive officer effective Jan. 1, 2025.
He will replace current president and CEO Scott Bolton, who will retire Dec. 31.
Thun joined UFA as executive vice-president and chief financial officer in 2020. While in that position, he managed an extensive portfolio including banking and capital structure, business development, controllership, credit, facilities, fleet, insurance, internal audit and treasury.
He was raised on a mixed farm near Kerrobert, Sask., and has spent most of his career in the agriculture sector.
