Sask. implement maker fined

Bourgault Industries, operating as Highline Manufacturing Ltd., has been fined $65,000 after a workplace accident two years ago.

The company pleaded guilty in Saskatoon Provincial Court July 22 to one violation of occupational health and safety regulations.

RCMP have charged a 51-year-old Weyburn man after an altercation at the Pioneer elevator at Corinne, Sask. July 22.

The charge was laid after an incident in Vonda, Sask., June 22, 2022, when a worker was seriously injured while flushing highly flammable solvent through an electrostatic paint gun.

Two other charges were withdrawn.

The guilty plea was for contravening clause 3-1 (a): being an employer, fail to comply with the duties of an employer at a place of employment including the provision and maintenance of a plant, systems of work and working environments that ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of the employers’ workers, resulting in the serious injury of a worker.

The court-imposed fine is $46,428.57, plus a surcharge of $18,571.43.

Western Crop Innovations funded

Alberta Grains has provided Western Crop Innovations $375,000 in inaugural funding.

The contribution will support WCI through the balance of the current fiscal year. Alberta Grains will enter further discussions with the organization to create a long-term funding agreement.

WCI, formerly known as the Field Crop Development Centre at Olds College of Agriculture & Technology, was established in 2024 as a not-for-profit organization.

It researches feed and forage barley, malting barley and triticale varieties optimized for Alberta’s agricultural conditions on a core land base of 400 acres near Lacombe, Alta.

4-H appoints new leadership

4-H Canada has a new board of directors for 2024-25.

Members include David Hansen, chair, Manitoba; Robert Larsen, vice-chair, Prince Edward Island; Carlie Whetter, past chair, Manitoba; Danielle Chu, Ontario; Fawn Jackson, Ontario; Shelley Jones, Saskatchewan; Neleah Lavoie, P.E.I,; Tyler McCann, Quebec; Amy McConchie, New Brunswick; Ben Graham, Alberta, chair, Canadian 4-H Foundation; and Katie MacNeil, Nova Scotia, Youth Advisory Committee representative.
