B.C. dairy producers donate to food banks

British Columbia’s dairy farmers have launched a campaign to raise $100,000 to support Food Banks BC.

Until July 11, producers will donate $1 for every “like and share” of select influencer posts, up to a maximum of $50,000.

From July 12 to Aug. 1, dairy farmers will match donations up to a maximum of $50,000.

Food Banks BC supports 106-member food banks throughout the province.

Since 2020 and the start of the pandemic, B.C.’s dairy farmers have partnered with Food Banks BC to donate approximately 50,000 kilograms of dairy products and more than $200,000 in cash donations.

Controlled environment agriculture funded

The RBC Foundation will donate $150,000 to the Olds College of Agriculture and Technology in Olds, Alta., to support its work on controlled environment agriculture.

The funding will help develop the educational resources, training materials and infrastructure needed to create CEA programs.

Over the next three years, it is expected to benefit 1,880 students as they learn about environmental factors, hydroponic and aeroponic systems, data analysis and precision agriculture.

Soy Canada selects new board of directors

Jason McNaughton will continue as chair of Soy Canada, following the organization’s recent annual general meeting.

Joining McNaughton on the board’s executive are Melvin Rattai as vice-chair and Michelle Wall as secretary-treasurer.

Other members of the board of directors are:

  • Dale Heide, nominated by Delmar Commodities, elected by processing members.
  • Andrea Faubert, nominated by Corteva Agriscience, elected by seed company members.
  • Jeff Stonehouse, nominated by Andersons Canada, renewed by commodity exporting members.
  • Scott Persall, nomination renewed by Grain Farmers of Ontario.
  • Winston van Staveren, nomination renewed by Saskatchewan Pulse Growers.
  • Ernie Sirski, nomination renewed by Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers.

The organization also honoured three departing board members: Jeff Loessin, Mark Jorgensen and former chair Ernie Sirski.
