AgriStability still open in B.C.

British Columbia’s agricultural sector can still participate in the AgriStability program for the 2022 farming year.

Farmers and producers have until June 30 to pay their fees and secure coverage.

The program provides support to growers with large financial declines caused by production losses, disease outbreak and increased costs or declining market conditions.

A severe avian influenza outbreak, crop production losses and extreme weather were all factors in the decision to enable late participation in the program.

Clean technology projects funded

The federal government plans to spend nearly $1.6 million through the Agricultural Clean Technology Program on four new projects related to developing and adopting clean technology by agri-businesses in British Columbia:

  • Lucent BioSciences at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby is receiving about $1.3 million to develop natural-based, non-polluting micronutrients suitable for seed coating. This solution aims to help improve crop yields and reduce fertilizer runoff.
  • B JACK Farms in Abbotsford is receiving about $70,000 to install a solar system and electric-powered farm equipment to reduce reliance on the electrical grid and gasoline fuel in the egg production process.
  • Blueberry Junction in Abbotsford is receiving about $109,000 to install a solar system to reduce electrical consumption for its blueberry operation.
  • Fresh Valley Farms in Armstrong is receiving about $61,000 to install a solar system and an electrical pivot irrigation system on its organic farm.
