FCC appoints new V-P

Jeff Affleck is the new senior vice-president of operations for Farm Credit Canada in British Columbia and Alberta.

Affleck was formerly the senior director of the FCC Saskatoon District.

He was born and raised in Souris, Man., and now lives in Calgary. He leads a team of 235 FCC employees who serve 5,800 customers in British Columbia and 21,500 customers in Alberta for a total loan portfolio of more than $10 billion.

Squeal on pigs with an app

The new Farm Health Guardian app provides a quick and free way to report wild pig sightings to the Squeal on Pigs Manitoba initiative.

The new collaboration is between the Manitoba Invasive Swine Eradication Project, Manitoba Pork and Farm Health Guardian.

Squeal on Pigs Manitoba was launched earlier this year through the Manitoba Invasive Swine Eradication Project to get a better understanding of the wild pig population in the province and to concentrate eradication efforts in the right areas.

Management award nominations sought

Nominations are due Oct. 21 for the 2022 Wilson Loree Award from Farm Management Canada.

The 15-year-old award honours individuals or groups for extraordinary contributions to developing new and positive change in agricultural business management practices.

Key characteristics for nomination include people or groups who have:

  • Made significant contributions in the area of farm business management regionally or nationally.
  • Demonstrated innovation in areas such as turning research into practical management tools, adapting best practices from other sectors to agriculture, and finding new ways to deliver training, information and resources to farm managers.
  • Served as a role model and a mentor to colleagues, partners and clients.
  • Demonstrated the ability to network and develop partnerships to include others in furthering the shared goals and vision of the agriculture industry.

Animal Health awards presented

Dr. Jim Fairles was presented with the Carl Block Award during the Animal Health Canada forum recently held in Ottawa.

Fairles is a veterinarian and AHC board member nominated by his peers for his passion and commitment to animal health.

Dr. Glen Duizer was presented with the new Leadership in Collaboration Award that recognizes an individual’s commitment to farmed animal health and welfare through the promotion of public-private collaboration.

Duizer is a leader in the province for his work in animal health and surveillance. He helped establish public-private collaboration networks, including a PED provincial disease management program with the Manitoba Pork Council.
