Animal health award nominations sought
Nominations are open until Aug. 15 for two awards from Animal Health Canada.
- Carl Block Award — Named in honour of the late Alberta and Saskatchewan cattle producer, the award is open to individuals involved in non-government organizations.
- Leadership in Collaboration Award — This is a new award created by Animal Health Canada. Recipients must have demonstrated a commitment to farmed animal health and welfare through the promotion of public-private collaboration.
Nominations may be made by individuals, governments or organizations.

Agribition appoints CEO
Canadian Western Agribition has named Shaun Kindopp the show’s next chief executive officer.
Kindopp joins the organization Aug. 2 after the departure of Chris Lane to Economic Development Regina.
Kindopp spent 10 years in the event and entertainment industry, most recently as director of corporate partnerships and sales at the Regina Exhibition Association. He also spent five years at the Regina Pats junior hockey club as a senior account executive of corporate partnerships.
CCA hires new general manager
The Canadian Cattle Association and Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association have announced that Ryder Lee is rejoining the former as general manager, effective Sept. 1.
Lee has been the SCA chief executive officer since 2015. Before that, from 2005 to 2015, he was in CCA’s government affairs office in Ottawa.
CCA executive vice-president Dennis Laycraft said Lee brings “an exceptional range of expertise” to the organization.
ASF research leads appointed
Dr. Danielle Julien and Dr. Lucie Verdon will have lead roles on the African swine fever project for Animal Health Canada during the final third year of the project.
Julien was born in Grenada and has worked on avian influenza with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs’ Growing Forward Program, the Poultry Industry Council and the Livestock Research Innovation Corporation.
She has also done research work in antimicrobial resistance at the AMR-One Health Consortium, One Health at the University of Calgary and for the Canadian Animal Health Surveillance System.
Verdon lives near Hawkesbury, Ont., and has been a veterinarian for more than 38 years.
She has also worked on food safety and on-farm food safety programs for for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, slaughterhouses, the Université de Montréal, a project in Vietnam and MAPAQ.
She has experience working on various animal welfare and animal health management programs.
