Cost of production network needs farmers

The Canadian Cow-calf Cost of Production Network is looking for producers to sign up by Nov. 30 to participate in two focus group sessions taking place from January to March.

The network launched last year to benchmark cow-calf production systems across Canada.

It’s intended to provide producers with an opportunity for continuous learning.

Outstanding young farmers showcased

Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers event will be held virtually this year.

Seven farm couples have been chosen from their home regions to present highlights of their operations Dec. 3:

  • Raymond and Tracey Bredenhof of R&T Poultry & Bredenhof Hops in Abbotsford, B.C .
  • Roelof and Mary Van Benthem of Van Benthem Dairy Ltd. in Spruce View, Alta.
  • Michael and Jessica Lovich of Lovholm Dairy in Balgonie, Sask.
  • Andre and Katie Steppler of Steppler Farms Ltd. in Miami, Man.
  • Jenny Butcher and Wes Kuntz of Little Brown Cow Dairy in Brantford, Ont.
  • Geneviève Grossenbacher and James Thompson of Notre petite ferme in Lochaber Partie Ouest, Que.
  • Philip and Katie Keddy of Charles Keddy Farms Ltd. in Woodville, N.S.

CASA announces new board leadership

Peter Sykanda, farm policy analyst with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, was elected by the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association’s membership to the seven-person board of directors.

Sykanda’s responsibilities at the OFA include managing farm labour and safety, climate change, rural internet connectivity and advocating for the increased attention and support for farmer mental health.

Carolyn Van Den Heuvel (Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture) and Dean Anderson (Workplace Safety and Prevention Services) were re-elected to the board.

Dan Trottier (Tatonga Inc.) assumes the position of chair for the 2021-22 year.

Thea Green is vice-chair, Dean Anderson (Workplace Safety and Prevention Services) continues as treasurer and Wendy Bennett (AgSafe) is secretary.

Karl Klotzbach (CNH Industrial America) completes the board of directors.

Farmer co-op selects scholarship winners

Jill Ohm and Ryan Dinsmore are recipients of the inaugural Hensall (Ontario) Co-op Bright Futures Scholarship.

Both are enrolled in the bachelor of science in agriculture program at the University of Guelph.

Nicklas Juhnke from South Huron received the third scholarship and plans to become a chartered professional accountant after completing his bachelor of commerce at Carleton University.

The award provides post-secondary scholarships to students entering their first year of post-secondary education and have shown a career interest in agriculture or a field or trade that will advance rural communities and economies.

Up to three $2,500 scholarships are awarded to students who are children or grandchildren of individuals who were a member or an employee of Hensall Co-op as of March 1 of the year of application.

The Canadian farmer-owned co-operative is the eighth largest non-financial co-op in the country.
