Canola board of directors elected

Mike Ammeter from Sylvan Lake, Alta., was elected chair for a two-year term with the Canadian Canola Growers Association.

Dean Roberts from Coleville, Sask., was also elected director.

CCGA’s 10-board members represent five provincial canola organizations:

4-H members awarded

Four young people were virtually recognized during the 4-H Canada Leadership Awards, which recognized outstanding contributions of 4-H youth, leaders, alumni, and champions.

Veronika Parkinson, Matthew Sterling, Amanda McGillivray and Morgan Hussey were the recipients of 4-H Canada’s Leadership Excellence Award of Distinction.

Mentors were also announced for each of the four scholars: Ryan Hreljac, founder of the Ryan’s Well Foundation; Warren Bills, a 4-H alumnus and chief executive simplifier of Convergence Growth Inc.; Senator Stanley Kutcher, psychiatrist and professor; and Elly Vandenberg, director of the Global Office Canada for the United Nations World Food Program.

The event also honoured 4-H leaders and alunmi Carol Williams, Lyle Vanclief, Duane Bristow and Nancy Orr.

March is agriculture literacy month

Agriculture in the Classroom is participating in the 10th annual Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month from March 1-31.

Thousands of kindergarten to Grade 12 students celebrate Canada’s agriculture and food story by being connected with hands-on, interactive agriculture learning opportunities throughout the month.

This year, it is being delivered virtually into classrooms, which is expected to reach more classrooms by bringing the program online.

Lethbridge scholarships awarded

Aaron Lorenz from the University of Lethbridge and Brady Donkersgoed from the University of Alberta are recipients of the 2021 agricultural scholarship awards from the Lethbridge and District Exhibition and the Rotary Club of Lethbridge East.

Each student received a $10,000 scholarship to support their post-secondary studies in the field of agriculture.

FCC AgriSpirit Fund seeks applications

Farm Credit Canada is accepting applications until March 31 from registered charities and non-profit organizations in rural Canada for the $1.5 million FCC AgriSpirit Fund.

For the past 17 years, FCC has awarded between $5,000 and $25,000 for community improvement initiatives.

Since its inception in 2004, the fund has supported 1,356 capital projects in rural Canada totaling $16.5 million in donations.

FCC will announce the selected projects in September.
