Researchers participate in mentorship program
The Beef Cattle Research Council has selected six researchers from across Canada for the 2020-21 Beef Researcher Mentorship program following an open application process.
Participants are paired with innovative cattle producers and other industry professionals for a one year mentorship along with an 18-month travel budget to attend industry meetings, producer workshops, and farm tours.
- Mentee: Alexander Koiter, assistant professor in Brandon University’s geography and environment department.
Mentors: Kristine Tapley of Ducks Unlimited Canada and Larry Wegner, livestock producer in Virden, Man.

Mentors: Anne Wasko of Eastend, Sask., a market analyst for 35 years, and Brett McCrae, who runs a mixed operation near Brandon.
- Mentee: Monika Gorzelak, who leads a research team at Agriculture Canada in Lethbridge.
Mentors: Rylee and Lyle Hewitt, who ranch near Cowley, Alta., and Andy Hart, who ranches near Claresholm, Alta.
- Mentee: Trevor Coates, a researcher at Agriculture Canada’s Research and Development Centre in Lethbridge.
Mentors: Rich Smith, a retired agricultural engineer in Calgary, and Kendra Donnelly, who helps manage a farming operation near Acme, Alta.
