Wilson Loree Award presented
Elaine Froese from southwestern Manitoba was awarded the 2018 Wilson Loree Award from Farm Management Canada during its recent Agricultural Excellence Conference in Winnipeg.
The annual award honours individuals or groups who have made an extraordinary contribution to advancing agricultural business management practices in Canada.
As a professional business coach, Froese mentors families with their succession planning.
The author of several books, Froese’s online course, Get Farm Transition Unstuck, helps farmers more effectively plan.
She has been a regular contributor to Grainews for more than 20 years and her blog reaches more than 7,500 subscribers.

Law prof joins Ag Review Tribunal
Patricia Farnese has been appointed as a member of the Canada Agricultural Review Tribunal for a three-year term.
Farnese is an associate professor of law at the University of Saskatchewan where she teaches property, agriculture and wildlife law.
She is a member of the Law Society of Saskatchewan and previously served as vice-chair of the practitioner staff appeals tribunal for Saskatchewan, where she adjudicated disputes between administrators of health authorities and their practitioner staff.
The tribunal reviews notices of violation issued by federal agencies regulating agriculture and food.
Its members are appointed by the governor-in-council upon the recommendation of the agriculture minister.
Beef award nominations sought
Nominations are being accepted until Jan. 18 for the Manitoba Beef Producers Lifetime Achievement Award.
The award, presented every five years, recognizes a beef producer who has made significant contributions to the beef industry, exemplifying leadership and involvement in their community and province.
Individuals and families are eligible for the award, which is expected to be presented during the 40th annual general meeting in Brandon Feb. 7.

Equipment dealers raise funds
The Western Equipment Dealers Association raised more than $150,000 at the WEDA International Dealer Conference for WEDA’s foundations.
The money is expected to go toward scholarships to support career and technical education programs for ag equipment technicians.
The foundations help to fund educational programs and services for agricultural, industrial and outdoor power equipment dealers across North America.
The Canadian Equipment Dealers Foundation has distributed more than $2.5 million to current and prospective dealership employees, colleges for training programs, scholarships and capital funding since 1998.

Plant breeding director appointed
Andrew Sharpe was recently appointed director of the University of Saskatchewan’s Plant Phenotyping and Imaging Research Centre.
The plant molecular geneticist will lead the next phase of the research program, which aims to transform seed and plant breeding of large-area crops.
It will focus on using digital breeding techniques to create climate-smart crops and on artificial intelligence and digital data acquisition tools to enhance the yield potential of large-scale food crops.
