2018 Carl Block award presented

Dr. Eugene Janzen is the recipient of the 2018 Carl Block Award presented by the Canadian Animal Health Coalition for outstanding contributions in the field of livestock animal health.

This award is in memory of Carl Block, who was chair of the CAHC when he passed away as the result of a small plane crash in May 2002.

Janzen has a long-standing involvement in beef cattle production and education through the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

His research is focused on the diagnosis and prevention of disease and promotion of animal health and welfare in agriculture.

Funding to help advance public trust

The federal government is investing up to $251,250 in the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, to support the creation of a public trust strategy.

The project is intended to help the sector meet Canadians’ needs by better understanding which values are most important to them regarding food.

The government will also invest up to $190,000 to the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity for research to better understand what Canadians believe and value about the food they buy and eat.

The agriculture and agri-food sector generated $114.5 billion in gross domestic product and employed about 2.3 million people in 2017.

Man. producer wins leadership award

The Canadian Forage and Grassland Association has named Dave Koslowsky winner of the 2018 CFGA Leadership Award.

Koslowsky operates a family-run 1,720-acre mixed farm outside of Killarney, Man., that includes 120 head of cattle.

He is past-chair and a current board member of the Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association, as well as a member of the Manitoba Beef Producers.

During his time on the MFGA board, Koslowsky helped advance diversity, governance and leadership in the forage industry.

New Grain Growers structure unveiled

Grain Growers of Canada recently concluded the rejuvenation of the organization with the election of a new board of directors and officers. 

Jeff Nielsen of the Alberta Barley Commission was elected chair of the organization with Markus Haerle of Grain Farmers of Ontario and Shane Stokke of the Saskatchewan Flax Development Commission serving as vice-chairs.

The organization added three new members this past summer.

Previously, GGC was led by a president, vice-president, and an executive committee with each member organization having a seat on the board of directors.

Dairy expansion receives funding

Cheese processor La Trappe à Fromage de l’Outaouais has received $584,063 in federal funding to help install automation equipment to optimize processing and improve product quality, production capacity and food safety.

Under the Quebec Economic Development Program, the company is also receiving $300,000 in the form of a repayable contribution to buy and install equipment to digitize production.

The Gatineau-based company employs 60 workers and specializes in soft cheddar, brie, vintage brick, colby and cheddar and specialty farmhouse cheese and raclette.
