4-H L.E.A.D. scholarship winners announced
4-H Canada and Canadian National Railway have announced four recipients of the 2018 4-H Canada Leadership Excellence Awards of Distinction.
The award recognizes 4-H youth who demonstrate personal development, community impact and leadership excellence in each of 4-H Canada’s four leadership development pillars.
- McAuley Bellows of Newfoundland is the recipient for the community engagement and communications pillar.
- Emma Kaliel of Alberta is the recipient for the science and technology pillar.
- Audrey Morneau of Quebec is the recipient for the environment and healthy living pillar.
- Emmett Sawyer of Alberta is the recipient for the sustainable agriculture and food security pillar.

Each L.E.A.D. recipient receives a $20,000 scholarship toward four-year post-secondary studies and is also matched with a mentor who plays a leadership role in their industry and community.

Red Round-Up sponsorship committed
The Canadian Angus Association has committed $60,000 over five-years to sponsor the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society for its Red Round-Up Junior Heifer Calf Extravaganza.
It recently presented $10,000 in prize money to youth competitors at the 46th annual Canadian Red Round-Up held in Olds, Alta.
The Junior Extravaganza sees all heifer calves paraded at Red Round-Up for juniors to evaluate and decide which they might like to show in a special junior class. The juniors then bid and buy the right to show one of these heifers.
Canadian Angus sponsorship was presented to those placing first through fourth with all donations awarded to four juniors and used as a sale credit toward their Red Round-Up purchases.
The inaugural recipients of the funding were:
- First place: Jordan Dorrance — $4,000 showing Lot 44 Red Cinder Freyja 129F
- Second place: Parker Mclaughlin — $3,000 showing Lot 61 Red Vikse Hamilee 76F
- Third place: Isabella Mackenzie — $2,000 showing Lot 51 Red Dwajo Cherry 34F
- Fourth place: Erika Mackenzie — $1,000 showing Lot 55 Red Piro Soapy 827F
Food security directors appointed
The University of Saskatchewan recently announced that Alanna Koch has been selected as chair and Lorne Babiuk has been named vice-chair of the Global Institute For Food Security board of directors.
Koch was Saskatchewan’s deputy minister of agriculture for nine years and sat on the GIFS board before taking a leave of absence from her position as deputy minister to the premier of Saskatchewan during her bid for leadership of the Saskatchewan Party.
Koch is a past-president of the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance, a director with Agricore United, and executive director of the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association.
Babiuk is a world leader in vaccine and infectious disease research to improve the health of humans and animals.
He was instrumental in building the U of S’s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization and helped launch the International Vaccine Centre.
Babiuk was a Canada Research Chair at the U of S and served as vice-president research at the University of Alberta.
