Researcher awarded

Jim Dexter, who recently retired from the Canadian Grain Commission’s Grain Research Laboratory after 34 years of service, has been recognized for his contribution to grain science.

Dexter was the co-chair of the International Wheat Quality Conference IV in Saskatoon. International researchers came together to discuss wheat science issues.

At the conference, Dexter received an award for what conference co-chair Ravindra Chibbar described as his “exceptional and outstanding service.”

Dexter was the program manager of the milling research unit within the crops section of the Grain Research Laboratory.

Increasing farmland prices blamed on investors

a major tax and financial services firm says investors are driving up the value of farmland, preventing young farmers from entering the business. Robert Andjelic said that is bullshit.

During his career, Dexter was author or co-author of more than 130 refereed journal articles and more than 100 technical articles. He was part of a research team whose work led to the practice of debranning durum wheat before milling, which has become common practice.

He has served as adjunct professor at the University of Manitoba’s Food Science department. He was a member of the International Association for Cereal Science and Technology executive committee from 2000 to 2008.

Dexter was president of the American Association of Cereal Chemists International from 2003 to 2005.

He was awarded the Golden Jubilee Medal, 2002 and the William F. Geddes Lectureship Award in 2003.

Exhibition upgrade

The Government of Canada recently provided $3.5 million to help the Lloydminster Exhibition Association expand and renovate its facilities.

The project features a 2,300 sq. metre expansion, including renovations to the central convention hall and meeting rooms and connector links from existing buildings; kitchen and washroom upgrades; and improved wheelchair accessibility. The upgrades will also improve energy efficiency and air and water quality of the buildings.
