Safety guidelines

The Canadian Agricultural Safety and Health Program has set new guidelines for funding agricultural safety initiatives that support CASA’s mission to make agriculture a safe place by helping producers manage risk in their workplaces.

CASA project manager Jonas Johnson said projects should fit one of four priority areas: research and development, safe farm operations and management, communications, and building sector capacity to implement safety on farms.

CASHP’s selection committee may allocate funds to projects outside the priority areas if they make a significant contribution to increasing ag safety and health.

Farming scholarship

The Canadian Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust is accepting applications for its 2010 program. Applications are due by June 1.

Forms can be downloaded from the Nuffield Canada website at www.nuffield.ca/ApplicationForm.htm.

Nuffield Farming Scholarships are awarded to individuals between the ages of 25 and 45 who wish to explore topics of their choice in agriculture, land management, horticulture or the food chain.

The scholarship allows winners to study a topic of interest through travel. Scholars must complete their project within two years of the award and are required to travel and study for a minimum of two months. On return from their study tour, scholars are expected to write a report and present findings at the annual general meeting as well as to others in their industries.

Canadian Nuffield Scholars are also required to participate in the Contemporary Scholars Conference in which scholars from across the world convene for one week.

The 2010 conference will be held in March in Washington, D.C.
